BOCC Proclaims October as Florida Native Plant Month in Citrus County

The Citrus County Board of County Commissioners presented a Proclamation at their regular meeting on September 24, 2018 proclaiming October as Florida Native Plant Month in Citrus County. The Florida Native Plant Society began in the summer of 1980 in Winter Park, Florida by a group of scientists, educators and conservationists concerned about loss of Florida’s native plants and the introduction of non-native species overtaking natural areas. The society now consists of thirty-seven chapters and three thousand, nine hundred members from all walks of life who volunteer their time, knowledge and skills in public workshops, land management reviews, raising money for conservation and research grants, landscape awards, restoration projects and teaching Floridians about the benefits of native plants.

Citrus County has an incredible wealth of natural areas to showcase Florida’s native plants and the local chapter of Florida Native Plant Society has members who participate in activities that benefit the citizens and environment of Citrus County. The mission of the society is the preservation, conservation and restoration of the native plants and native plant communities of the county and Florida. The Board of County Commissioners of Citrus County proclaims October 2018 as “Florida Native Plant Month” in Citrus County, Florida and calls the observance to the attention of all citizens.
