Environment & Natural Resources Committee:

PURPOSE:  Preserve the environment upon which the ecosystems of Citrus County depends for the benefit of its citizens; Support educational efforts to promote conservation of our natural resources; encourage public policies that enable conservation and preservation of our natural heritage for future generations.

Past Accomplishments:

  • Contributed to development of SWFWMD Nutrient Remediation Workgroup reference booklet for lawn care by home owners,

  • Continued contributions to NRW efforts to educate public,

  • Educated the public via talks at meetings using SWFWMD Education,

  • Monitored the activities of the Withlacoochee Regional Water Supply Authority

Objectives:

  • Support "Local Sources First"; oppose proposals that are contrary;

  • Protect water resources (quantity) & water quality;

  • Protect both man and habitat (plants, animals) from toxic pollutants;

  • Support nuisance-noise abatement ordinances & activities;

  • Promote air quality measures;

  • Support tree preservation ordinances;

  • Support control & removal of large, unsightly billboards along public roads;

  • Support code enforcement related to local environmental issues (above).

  • Support cleanup of our waters: Kings Bay / Crystal River, Homosassa River, Chassahowitzka River and Nature Preserve, and related Springs.

Methodology to achieve these goals:
  • The Committee will work with other organizations, brief & question County and State officials from time to time, & publish positions and findings, as approved by the Council Executive Board;

  • Committee Members will attend & take part in various meetings where they can learn from, or educate, others regarding the issues that affect us all;

  • The Committee will from time to time report to the Council its status, progress & achievements, & seek from the Council advice, direction &, most importantly,

  • The Committee will research scientific results and technology available to support efforts to achieve the goals outlined previously.
